Not A Time Machine, A Journal of Moments

Monday, 4 April

7:00 a.m - 12:50 p.m

I have arrived at the school for my School-Based Assessment session. The school in which I will be doing my SBE is called SK Taman Bukit Tiram in Ulu Tiram, Johor. The moment when I reached the school, I went to the office to report on duty for the week. The first person I met was the headmaster of the school. He asked for the letters and details of the SBE. Then, I went to meet the teacher as a learning partner, Ms Mardhiyah. After a discussion session with Ms Mardhiyah regarding the assignments, she invited me to join her class. The first class that I went to was called 4 Amarilis. Ms Mardhiyah is an English teacher, so she was teaching the English topics to the pupils. I was able to see the real situation of the process of teaching and learning in classrooms.  Near the afternoon, My learning partner and I went to the year 6 classroom named 6 Azalea. Ms Mardhiyah is also teaching English to the pupils. The topic for the day was unit 1, ‘It’s an emergency!’. The teacher has conducted a reading session of a newspaper article from the textbook with the pupils. After that, I was able to help the teacher during the activity session where pupils had to answer a few questions based on the article. Then, at 12:50 p.m, Ms Mardhiyah ended the class and the pupils went back home.

Tuesday, 5 April

7:00 a.m - 12:50 p.m

On the second day of the School-Based Assessment.  My morning was spent having a little discussion with Ms Mardhiyah about the assignments, the documents and her classes. It was a functional discussion as I was able to gain new knowledge. My learning partner, Ms Mardhiyah has assigned me to be in the class of 4 Aurora because the initial teacher was absent on the day. Since there was no homework for them to complete, I decided to come up with a fun activity with the pupils. The subject of that period was mathematics, hence the activity was based on calculations.  All the pupils participated actively in the classroom, they were all seen as excited to answer the questions. The second class of the day was the 4 Amarilis, where Ms Mardhiyah taught the English subject. On that day, the teacher focused on the language skill of phonics and pronunciation. Due to the pupils' proficiency level, the teacher had to put more effort into presenting the information.  Although it was quite hard for the students to grasp the knowledge, the teacher was not hindered by the fact and kept teaching until the end of the class.

Wednesday, 6 April

7:00 a.m - 12:50 p.m

The third day of my School Based Assessment period. Ms Mardhiyah did not have any classes during the first few periods before recess, hence I was able to spend my time completing the assignments related to SBE. Also, more discussions were held with my learning partner to receive more necessary information. Once again, I went to the class of 4 Amarilis with my learning partner, Ms Mardhiyah.  On that day, the teacher conducted a simple test to identify pupils' level of understanding of the topic learnt. As the language focus was on the phonic sounds, Ms Mardhiyah instructed all students to make the sounds based on the flashcards. Ms Mardhiyah was creative in teaching, she used funny but engaging gestures with each phonic sound. Also, she has included the usage of a song. There was plenty of useful knowledge gained from my experience at that time as a trainee teacher. One hour before the school hours end. I was assigned to the class of 6 Alamanda as a substitute teacher.  I decided to do some activities to kill time. The activity I managed to conduct was to fill in the blanks of countries' names. We had a great time and I got the chance to be close to the pupils.

Thursday, 7 April 2022

7:00 a.m - 12:50 p.m

The last day of my School Based Assessment in Sk Taman Bukit Tiram. On Thursday morning, the school had the Yassin recitation session which all teachers and pupils will recite together at the assembly. Not only that, I was surprised by the news that a teacher named Mrs Fauziah will move to another school. She was my mathematics teacher when I was still a young pupil in that school. We had a memorable farewell ceremony. After receiving permission from my learning partner, Ms Mardhiyah, I did a session of a test with the pupils of 4 Aurora. The test consisted of 20 multiple choice questions regarding the topic of year 4, ‘Where are you from?’. It was for the completion of an assignment. All pupils gave their best cooperation in answering the questions. As it was the last day, I had to get the signatures of the headmaster on a few documents. I went to the office and to his room with all the important papers to be signed. We did have a little talk, as he was signing the documents. After that, he had granted his best wishes for my success in the future as an English teacher. 20 minutes before the end, a discussion was held again between Ms Mardhiyah and me. This was where more information to help in the completion of assignments was done. Before it ended, Ms Mardhiyah gave a few meaningful pieces of advice as well as good wishes for the life ahead as a teacher.
